3. A-Lad-in-Bagdad

Description: The LikeTelevision™ Cartoon channel proudly presents A-Lad-in-Bagdad, get it.... like Aladdin... and his magic lamp. This cartoon is very overtly racist - as the Black Genie is an ugly stereotype - and of course the villain, the evil Arab character, appears to be an early member of Al Queda, working for the notorious Osama Bin Laden. This funky cartoon features that egghead guy as Aladdin, who wins the lamp in one of those midway crane games -see the great gum grabber in the toy section if you are confused. Well, the Sultan plans an entertainment contest to see who gets to marry his daughter. And it appears he is smoking a houka, you know..... a water pipe, like in the Jefferson airplane song, White Rabbit, which featured the houka smoking catepillar. Got it? BTW - we know that Bagdad is really spelled Baghdad.... ummm, I think it is anyway. It is hard to believe this was made for children, huh? Our apologies - we present it as a piece of history.

A poor homeless man named Boudu tries to drown himself in the Seine River, but is saved by the wealthy book store owner, Edouard Lestingois who was watching Boudu from his window. Boudu moves in with the family and has quite an impact on each of their lives. Priape Boudu is played by Michel Simon, who was a major star in France. Basically - he was like the French Charlie Chaplin or Jerry Lewis. Kind of like a national treasure. Also of note, this film caused a major scandal when it was released. Not because of the kissing or extramarital affairs (hey, they're French)... but people took major exception to, of all things - the filthy side of being homeless. Boudu's table manners, especially eating the food with his fingers. Totally taboo! The Police came and shut down theaters. It was a very serious matter at the time. In addition, Boudu doesn't seem particularly grateful to Monsieur Lestingois' generosity. Folks were infuriated by this as well.

99. Grande Illusion, La

Description: Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion, a.k.a. Grand Illusion is a wonderful film about 2 French Officers during WWI who are captured and sent to a prison camp. Erich von Stroheim, best known for his role as Max Von Meyerling in Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd, stars as a German Ace Captain von Rauffenstein (who shot down the 2 Frenchmen) and then gets reassigned to become commandant (he's not like Werner Von Klemperer, a.k.a. Colonel Klink) of a prison camp after sustaining serious injury by getting shot down. There's additional tension and class conflict between the French Captain De Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), who is an aristocrat and Lieutenant Marechal (Jean Gabin) who is a mechanic. The film also portrays an underlying anti-semitism, with the character Lieutenant Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio), who is slowing down an escape attempt when he strains his ankle. This is a really great film, voted in the top 250 of all time at IMDB.com.

The animation is as good as it gets, so join Gabby and his Lilliputian friends as they deal with this huge giant named Gulliver. Of course this tale has been rewritten from Jonathan Swift's original masterpiece, and somehow mixed with a dash of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. If you get a chance, see the Gulliver remake with Ted Danson, very entertaining.

He meets up with his girlfriend, Anna Schmidt - and is disturbed that the stories of Harry's demise don't add up. So he goes to the law -and learns from Major Calloway that Harry was a crook and a creep, who sold watered down penicillan in the Black Market. The film features obvious tributes to the 1936 Fritz Lang classic - M, about a child murderer - including the balloon man, the remarkable cinematography (Robert Krasker won the Best Oscar for Cinematography in 1951 for The Third Man), and the chase scenes in the streets of Germany (Austria-Hungary). You will also love the great music - Theme from the 3rd man, which was played on a zither by Anton Karas. Make sure you check out the preview. We also recommend that you check out Chet Atkin's version of the theme, which is just as remarkable as the Karas' zither masterpiece.
