1. Drunken Angel

Description: This is a classic movie - by perhaps the greatest filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa. Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura (the leader in Seven Samurai), treats a petty criminal named Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) with tuberculosis, and tries to get him to work at treating his disease (stop drinking, smoking, get some rest, etc.) Meanwhile, another gangster gets out of prison and a feud breaks out between rival factions. A cool look at the underworld in Japan in post WWII, and the courage of a poor doctor, who is trying to cure another human, even if he is a criminal. We regret that the subtitles are difficult to read - but the story is pretty easy to follow.

2. Floating Weeds - Ukigusa

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Floating Weeds or Ukigusa which is the roginal Japanese title. This is one of acclaimed director Yasujiro Ozu's finest works. It tells the wonderful story of Komajuro Arashi, an aging master of a travelling Kabuke troupe that is hits the skids in a small Japanese towns. (or to coin a phrase from This is Spinal Tap - their appeal is becoming more selective). Master Komajuro wants to see his son, who has grown up since his last visit a decade ago and his aging mistress, Sumiko. Of course this angers his current flame, the top actress of the show. Like many a spurned women, she seeks vengence and the results are disastrous. This is a great story from one of the best directors of all time and while many people might prefer Ozu's Tokyo Monogatari, Floating Weeds is my personal favorite.

3. Happy Birthday Akira Kurosawa

Description: The LikeTelevision™ History channel presents - This Day in Hollywood - March 23th!

4. Kwaidan - Hoichi the Earless

Description: Kwaidan is a spooky classic from Japan. The 1964 film offers four short horror stories. In the third story -Hoichi the Earless, follow the story of a blind Biwa player and his mystical journey into the spirit world. Hoichi has some wild visions as he entertains the tortured souls of a clan of Samurai warriors with his gift of musical skills. This story is so cool.... trust me, you need to see this. Be prepared for slower pacing... and be patient as you fall into Hoichi's mystical world. Also of note - if Takashi Shimura who plays the head priest looks familiar, well... he should. He starred in Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai as their leader and strategist.

5. Rashomon - Akira Kurosawa Classic

Description: LikeTelevision's movie channel is proud to present - Rashomon, a tale about a murder and rape - and a look at truth, justice and lies. We hear four separate accounts of the crime and each is quite different than the other versions. The film explores perception and reality. We learn about the TRUTH, a painful truth, that indeed we all tell lies, even to ourselves. If you have read any Existential works by Jean Paul Satre, Soren Kierkegaard, or Martin Heidegger - this film will really get you thinking about man's search for TRUTH.

6. Samurai One - Musashi Miyamoto

The village wild man, Takezo grows up and learns the way of the Samurai and eventually becomes - Musashi Miyamoto, the greatest Samurai warrior in Japan. Meanwhile, Takezo's best friend, Matahachi makes some bad decisions that ruin his life. At one time he was betrothed to the lovely Otsu, but he ends up marrying a nasty witch named Oko and his life becomes hell. This is part one - the rest of the trilogy will be available soon!

7. Seven Samurai

8. Throne of Blood

Description: Classic Kurosawa tale of ambition, power, and fate. Two Samurai warriors (Washiza and Miki) encounter an evil spirit in the Cobweb Forest who sees the future. She tells them of their rise to power and how ambition will guide their actions. The film draws from Shakespeare's Macbeth - but the setting is feudal Japan. Like Lady Macbeth, Washiza's wife has a difficult time washing that darn blood off her hands.

Starring Toshir? Mifune as Washiza, the trusted Samurai hero and protector of a group of powerful leaders who control the Cobweb Castle, and several other forts and castles An evil spirit's prophesy guides his actions and he kills the top Lord and usurps his power - only to be replaced by equally ambitious men.

Set in Feudal Japan - Two Samurai heros turn on their Lords and gain power. Did you know that Kurosawa films like this created the inspiration for films like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Yojimbo) and Star Wars (Hidden Fortress) Watch this clip for more Kurosawa background info!

9. Ugetsu

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents director Kenji Mizoguchi's 1953 classic tale of greed and ambition called Ugetsu (a.k.a. Ugetsu monogatari). This film features many of the same actors in Kurosawa's epic, Rashomon from 1950 - and also offers a story line that reminds one of the first tale from Kwaidan called Black Hair.

10. Yojimbo - The Bodyguard

Description: Starring Toshiro Mifune as Sanjuro Kuwabatake, the Ronin, or landless Samurai who comes to a crossroad that leads him to the town where feuding gangsters vie for control. Sanjuro plots to pit the gangsters against each other and free the people. Lots of terrific swordplay!
