2. Blue Angel, The

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - The Blue Angel starring Marlene Dietrich as Lola Lola and Emil Jannings as the college professor Immanuel Rath. Directed by Josef von Sternberg, this 1930 was originally called Professor Unrat, then Der Blaue Engel (German for the Blue Angel) and later released in the USA. This was the breakout film for Marlene Dietrich - her next film was a Hollywood classic, directed again by Von Sternberg called Morocco starring Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou.

3. Drunken Angel

Description: This is a classic movie - by perhaps the greatest filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa. Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura (the leader in Seven Samurai), treats a petty criminal named Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) with tuberculosis, and tries to get him to work at treating his disease (stop drinking, smoking, get some rest, etc.) Meanwhile, another gangster gets out of prison and a feud breaks out between rival factions. A cool look at the underworld in Japan in post WWII, and the courage of a poor doctor, who is trying to cure another human, even if he is a criminal. We regret that the subtitles are difficult to read - but the story is pretty easy to follow.

5. Goofy Goofy Gander

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents a classic Little Audrey cartoon - Goofy Goofy Gander. In a typical American classroom, the students are learning about Mother Goose and some classic nursery rhymes. Well, everyone except Little Audrey who is perusing a funky comic book about some gangsters. She gets sent to the corners and daydreams about Mother Gooseland. Little Boy Blue is swinging like mad, Little Tommy Tucker is crooning (like a Frank Sinatra caricature), The goose that lays the golden eggs, Humpty Dumpty, the Old Woman who lives in the Shoe - and more. Plus the gangsters infiltrate Mother Goose Land with their Thompson sub machine guns. rat-tat-tat. Great stuff

8. Lady of Burlesque

Description: A classic murder mystery - an old opera house has become a venue for a Burlesque Vaudeville troop, led by Dixie Daisy (Barbara Stanwyck) who is bringing in large crowds with her sassy song and dance numbers. Then, the girls start getting murdered - who is the killer? You will have to watch and find out! Based on the novel, The G-String Murders by the famous stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee. Be sure notice William Talman in part one, a.k.a. Burger on Perry Mason, waving at the girls on stage. Now we know why Perry won all those cases, Hamilton was watching the girly shows instead of preparing his briefs for trial.

9. Mister Scarface

Description: Mister Scarface is an entertaining Italian movie about a mobster named Scarface, played by Jack Palance, complete with the scar on his face. No, it's ot about Al Capone, but this other scarface evil twin from Italy. Imagine a 70's spaghetti gangsta film (as opposed to spaghetti western genre) - and don't be afraid to laugh.

10. Pajama Game

Description: The Pajama Game became the first in a string of smash hits for visionary choreographer Bob Fosse soon after it opened on Broadway in May of 1954. The play opened to rave reviews and was performed well over 1000 times. So when it came time to re-purpose it for the silver screen, Warner Bros. decided to basically lift the entire production from the stage at the St. James Theater and transport it to the sound stage in Hollywood. The female lead was changed from Janis Paige to Doris Day for box-office reasons and a couple of minor roles were switched out but, all-in-all what we see in the film is a faithful replication of the original Broadway production and a level of ensemble seldom seen on film. If you can stop being soooo sophisticated and are ready, willing and able to dispend reality for a little while, you will really enjoy this wonderful piece of period fluff.

11. Picture of Dorian Gray

Description: Set in London, 1886 - The Picture of Dorian Gray is based on the classic novella by Oscar Wilde with the screenplay adapted by Albert Lewin, who was also the director of this classic. The film won an Oscar in 1946 for Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling, Jr.) and is an interesting combination of richly contrasted Black and White - with a few scenes of the picture in technocolor. An excellent movie - especially if you are familiar with the legal troubles of Oscar Wilde, and have read the story

13. Shoot The Piano Player

Description: Francois Truffaut's gangster film from 1960 - Shoot the Piano Player (or in French - Tirez Sur le Pianiste) is terrific! Starring Charles Aznavour as local pub pianist Charlie Kohler and Marie Dubois as his love interest, Lena. Years ago, Charlie used to be reknowned concert pianist Edouard Saroyan, till he had a falling out with his wife, who fell out a window. Edouard dropped out and became Charlie Kohler, pub pianist. The fact that Charlie's brothers are gangsters complicates life a bit, lots of great dialogue too. PLUS, Boby Lapointe is featured in a cool singing waiter cameo and does a live rendition of catchy tune called Framboise.
