1. Bad Taste

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel presents a delightful horror classic from 1987 called Bad Taste, produced and directed by Peter Jackson, best known for his work on the JRR Tolkien movies, including the Lord of the Rings series and if fans get their wish, The Hobbit (though that looks bleak now). Well, long before Peter Jackson was a big cheese in film, he made this film with his school buddies over a four year period about a group of secret government agents in charge of keeping the world safe from invading aliens from distant galaxies. The budget for the film was next to nothing though it was a step up from a bunch of his previous efforts shot on 8mm film. Peter finally got a decent camera, a hand wound 16mm Bolex that was used for this movie and a little bit of money from a grant that helped him create more elaborate special effects.Bad Taste is an amazing movie - you can see the genius of Peter Jackson on display even as a young lad. He not only directed and produced this film, he even stars as young Derek, the courageous geek leader of the Alien Protection Squad who has to keep repacking his brains that have partially fallen out of his head.

2. Battleship Potemkin

4. Brink of Life

Description: LikeTelevision™ presents - a 1958 film directed by the Swedish legend, Ingmar Bergman called Nara livet, or Brink of Life. The film takes place in the maternity ward of a hospital and explores the powerful emotions of childbirth. Three pregnant women are the stars - each at a different stage of being pregnant and also in very different relationships with the men who fathered the babies. The film is really terrific and the fact that it was shot in the 1950s makes it even more compelling - knowing that the young girls are now in their 70s and 80s - and the babies in the movie are now almost 50 years old.

5. Bugs Bunny - Buy U.S. Bonds

7. Creepers

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel presents a delightful Dario Argento horror classic from 1985 called Phenomena, or Creepers - which was the name of the USA release. Jennifer Connelly stars as a young American school girl (she was 15 when she made the movie) named Jennifer Corvino, who is the daughter of a famous actor and off in Switzerland attending the Richard Wagner School for Girls. But oh my, not all is well at the school - there's a psychopathic killer on the loose. Weirder still, Jennifer Connelly has a knack for telepathically communicating with insects. She does a great job of protecting herself by using this gift and getting the insects to get the bad guy instead of her. The story is filled with countless twists and turns - and I bet you won't know who the killer is till part 6, and boy what a surprise that is! Filled with lots of bloody FX and folks, this one is creepy, scary and just plain - out there. Imagine Buffalo Bill meets Mommie Dearest Meets Chuckie. Say no more.

8. Drunken Angel

Description: This is a classic movie - by perhaps the greatest filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa. Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura (the leader in Seven Samurai), treats a petty criminal named Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) with tuberculosis, and tries to get him to work at treating his disease (stop drinking, smoking, get some rest, etc.) Meanwhile, another gangster gets out of prison and a feud breaks out between rival factions. A cool look at the underworld in Japan in post WWII, and the courage of a poor doctor, who is trying to cure another human, even if he is a criminal. We regret that the subtitles are difficult to read - but the story is pretty easy to follow.

9. Escape from Sobibor

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Escape from Sobibor starring Alan Arkin, Joanna Pacula and Rutger Hauer. Sobibor was a Jewish concentration camp in World War II that was created for the sole purpose of exterminating as many Jewish people as quickly as possible - part of Hitler's notorious final solution, which called for eliminating the Jewish people from Europe. Most estimates believe that 260,000 people were killed in the Nazi gas chambers at Sobibor - making it a small sized operation compared to Auschwitz or Dachau. What makes Sobibor so noteworthy - the escape on October 14, 1943 when over 300 of the 600 Jewish prisoners escaped into the Polish death camp and lived to tell their story. The film does a remarkable job of telling the story of these determined heros - and heroines who refused to give into despair, and hoped in spite of a hopeless situation. The film was nominated for 5 Emmy Awards, and Won the Golden Globeaward n 1988 for Best Motion Picture made for TV. Excellent.

10. Felix The Cat - Bold King Cole

Description: From 1936 - it's Felix The Cat in Bold King Cole. In this toon, Old King Cole likes to brag a lot about his courage and the ghosts of the castle want to teach him a lesson, and let the air out of the windbag. Terrific animation - and of course, Felix the Cat, who is always cool. A killer classic from Van Beuren Studios.

13. Harrad Experiment, The

Description: The Harrad Experiment, based on Robert Rimmer's sex manifesto of the same name, is a classic tale of how idiotic people were in the 1960s and 1970s. A group of college kids become laboratory rats to test and challenge basic notions of sex and marriage. The movie stars a very young Don Johnson, James Whitmore (best known as the Miracle Grow spokesman), and Tippi Hedren (who got her eyes pecked out in Hitchcock's The Birds - BTW, she looks better with her clothes on, and do not be frightened by her parachute sized underwear). Also stars Fred Willard as part of a comedy troup called The Ace Trucking Company. This is a very strange movie and you will shake your head, wondering - did people really believe this garbage?

14. Horror Hotel - City of the Dead

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel is proud to present Horror Hotel, starring Christopher Lee, a legend in the horror genre. The film also introduces a new star - Venetia Stevenson as Nan Barlow, the young student who will get sacrificed in part 3. Well guess what - Venetia Stevenson is Don Everly's ex-wife, like Phil & Don, Bye, Bye Love and Wake Up Little Susie. But wait - Don and Venetia's daughter married Axel Rose of Guns 'n Roses, so that makes her Axel's ex mother-in-law. (they got divorced). But I digress - Horror Hotel is a really creepy movie that is also funny at times because the acting is - shall we say - stiff.

17. Man with the Golden Arm

Description: Frank Sinatra is Frankie Machine - a recovering heroin addict, married to a crippled woman who encourages him to deal cards with his “golden“ arm. Meanwhile, he's in love with another woman (Kim Novak). Lots of really cool period jazz music - though old blues eyes doesn't sing, he does play some terrible drums, especially when he's jones-ing in a cold turkey spasm. Also of note is Elmer Bernstein's really cool jazzy music, which helps drive the film's emotional rollercoaster.

18. Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring, a cult classic that helps understand tragic realities from the Love Generation era starring Sally Field, David Carradine, Jackie Cooper, Eleanor Parker and Lane Bradbury. Dennie Miller (Sally Field) plays a sad young girl (yes... from a good home) who learns about life and the hippy peace & love myths the hard way. She returns home only to find her Mom and Dad making the same mistakes that helped encourage her to escape the suburban lifestyle still in force. Meanwhile, she laments as she watches her little sister travel down the road that leads to learning the hard way.

19. Monster Maker

Description: The LikeTelevision™ Movie channel proudly presents - The Monster Maker - with J. Carrol Naish as the fiendish Dr. Igor Markoff - an insane Doctor who gives the father of the women he desires an injection with the acromegaly virus. The “mickey“ leaves the father looking like a deformed monster. (We do recommend this as a viable dating technique).

20. Pajama Game

Description: The Pajama Game became the first in a string of smash hits for visionary choreographer Bob Fosse soon after it opened on Broadway in May of 1954. The play opened to rave reviews and was performed well over 1000 times. So when it came time to re-purpose it for the silver screen, Warner Bros. decided to basically lift the entire production from the stage at the St. James Theater and transport it to the sound stage in Hollywood. The female lead was changed from Janis Paige to Doris Day for box-office reasons and a couple of minor roles were switched out but, all-in-all what we see in the film is a faithful replication of the original Broadway production and a level of ensemble seldom seen on film. If you can stop being soooo sophisticated and are ready, willing and able to dispend reality for a little while, you will really enjoy this wonderful piece of period fluff.

21. Picture of Dorian Gray

Description: Set in London, 1886 - The Picture of Dorian Gray is based on the classic novella by Oscar Wilde with the screenplay adapted by Albert Lewin, who was also the director of this classic. The film won an Oscar in 1946 for Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling, Jr.) and is an interesting combination of richly contrasted Black and White - with a few scenes of the picture in technocolor. An excellent movie - especially if you are familiar with the legal troubles of Oscar Wilde, and have read the story

22. Popeye - Patriotic Popeye

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Patriotic Popeye, starring our favorite spinach eating sailorman, Popeye. In this classic, Popeye tries to encourage his troublesome nephews to have some good clean fun for the July 4th holiday. And all they want to do is get to the fireworks shed and blow up stuff. Then - guess what? Why the boys get into trouble and need Popeye to save them, after a healthy dose of spinach of course. Nice animation - a good clean fun American Holiday celebration featuring the pride of the U.S. Navy, Popeye. Also of note - for some reason, the nephews have been reduced to 2 from 4. I have no idea why - and i am not sure which 2 nephews are featured, so i listed all four in the cast.

Based on the classic literary work by Baroness Orczy - the movie is delightful screen adaptation of the story of Sir Percy Blakeney, a foppish fool in the English aristocracy who is secretly a courageous hero that saves some French aristocrats from Reign of Terror. Description: Vincent Price plays a washed up Shakespearean actor named Edward Lionheart, who goes crazy after he loses The Critic's Award. Though the critics think he committed suicide after losing, he is actually alive, and arranges a Shakespearean death for all the critics who spurned him. Great movie, fine acting, and filmed in Britain.

29. Throne of Blood

Description: Classic Kurosawa tale of ambition, power, and fate. Two Samurai warriors (Washiza and Miki) encounter an evil spirit in the Cobweb Forest who sees the future. She tells them of their rise to power and how ambition will guide their actions. The film draws from Shakespeare's Macbeth - but the setting is feudal Japan. Like Lady Macbeth, Washiza's wife has a difficult time washing that darn blood off her hands.

Starring Toshir? Mifune as Washiza, the trusted Samurai hero and protector of a group of powerful leaders who control the Cobweb Castle, and several other forts and castles An evil spirit's prophesy guides his actions and he kills the top Lord and usurps his power - only to be replaced by equally ambitious men.

Set in Feudal Japan - Two Samurai heros turn on their Lords and gain power. Did you know that Kurosawa films like this created the inspiration for films like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Yojimbo) and Star Wars (Hidden Fortress) Watch this clip for more Kurosawa background info!

30. To Kill A Mockingbird

Description: To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic American film, based on Harper Lee's novel, Horton Foote's screenplay is amazing - and Gregory Peck's performance as Atticus Finch was nothing short of stunning. The story is told through the eyes of Jean Louise Finch, Scout to her friends, as she recalls this tumultuous period many years later. Mary Badham's performance as Scout is flawless. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role but lost to Patty Duke for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. Had she won, she would have been the youngest person to win this award. 1962 was one of the best years in the history of film. I am convinced this film would have won best picture - but it happened to come out the same year as David Lean's masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia, with Peter O'Toole. How good was 1962 you ask? On top of those two epic films - you had Mutiny on the Bounty. The Miracle Worker, Days of Wine and Roses, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Billy Budd, The Music Man, Birdman of Alcatraz. The Manchurian Candidate, and The Longest Day. Come on Hollywood... get to work and give us another 1962!
