4. Ballet Mecanique

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents Fernand Leger's remarkable 1924 short film Ballet Mechanique. Fernand Leger was one of the greatest French Cubist painters (do a google image search of his name) and a contemporary of Pablo Picasso. In the early days of film as an artform, Leger created this masterpiece - which is landmark film in the development of montage, a cinematic tool that juxtiposes two or more images to infer related ideas or events. The best known example is Sergei Eisenstein's scene from Battleship Potemkin - the Odessa Steps segment with the baby carriage rolling down the steps and the mother's eyeglasses - made a year after this film.

5. Battle of Algiers, The

Description: The Battle of Algiers (or La Battaglia di Algeri if you prefer the original French title) is a remarkable movie about the sublime horrors of war. Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, this 1965 documentary tells the story of the Battle of Algiers, which pitted a French colonial government against an emerging group of revolutionary Islamic rebels, who used terrorism and suicide attacks to gain independence, but lost this battle - as the French used torture to extract information to break up and destroy the terrorist cells. Ultimately, the country did gain independence, but only after the French broke the revolutionary movement. The movie is very realistic, though no archive war footage was used in the creation of this film. The story tries to tell an unbiased review of events that transpired during this tumultuous period for the Northern African country.

The film takes place in the maternity ward of a hospital and explores the powerful emotions of childbirth. Three pregnant women are the stars - each at a different stage of being pregnant and also in very different relationships with the men who fathered the babies. The film is really terrific and the fact that it was shot in the 1950s makes it even more compelling - knowing that the young girls are now in their 70s and 80s - and the babies in the movie are now almost 50 years old.

It won a special Edgar award in 1956 as well as honors for Best Foreign Film from the New York Critics Circle in 1955. Simone Signoret's performance is nothing short of amazing. My favorite comment on the movie - it is the greatest movie Hitchcock never made - and one can easily see the Sir Alfred style of suspense at work and perhaps Hitchcock got a few good ideas from this film as well.

15. Drunken Angel

Description: This is a classic movie - by perhaps the greatest filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa. Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura (the leader in Seven Samurai), treats a petty criminal named Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) with tuberculosis, and tries to get him to work at treating his disease (stop drinking, smoking, get some rest, etc.) Meanwhile, another gangster gets out of prison and a feud breaks out between rival factions. A cool look at the underworld in Japan in post WWII, and the courage of a poor doctor, who is trying to cure another human, even if he is a criminal. We regret that the subtitles are difficult to read - but the story is pretty easy to follow.

The film tells an amazing story of the war as seen through the eyes of some beautiful children who are paying a dear price for the troubles of the world. We highly recommend this movie. Two thumbs up.

21. Grande Illusion, La

Description: Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion, a.k.a. Grand Illusion is a wonderful film about 2 French Officers during WWI who are captured and sent to a prison camp. Erich von Stroheim, best known for his role as Max Von Meyerling in Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd, stars as a German Ace Captain von Rauffenstein (who shot down the 2 Frenchmen) and then gets reassigned to become commandant (he's not like Werner Von Klemperer, a.k.a. Colonel Klink) of a prison camp after sustaining serious injury by getting shot down. There's additional tension and class conflict between the French Captain De Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), who is an aristocrat and Lieutenant Marechal (Jean Gabin) who is a mechanic. The film also portrays an underlying anti-semitism, with the character Lieutenant Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio), who is slowing down an escape attempt when he strains his ankle. This is a really great film, voted in the top 250 of all time at IMDB.com.

In the third story -Hoichi the Earless, follow the story of a blind Biwa player and his mystical journey into the spirit world. Hoichi has some wild visions as he entertains the tortured souls of a clan of Samurai warriors with his gift of musical skills. This story is so cool.... trust me, you need to see this. Be prepared for slower pacing... and be patient as you fall into Hoichi's mystical world. Also of note - if Takashi Shimura who plays the head priest looks familiar, well... he should. He starred in Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai as their leader and strategist.

26. Kwaidan - In A Cup of Tea

Description: Kwaidan is a spooky classic from Japan. The 1964 film offers four short horror stories. This page features the fourth and final story of the movie and is called A Cup of Tea. A man pours himself a cup, and sees a man's reflection in the water smiling back at him. He dumps it out several times, but eventually drinks it all up. Hmmm... not a good idea, as it seems he may have quaffed the man's soul in the process.

31. Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. This film by Robert Enrico is adapted from the story written by Ambrose Bierce. The short film does an excellent job of telling this great tale, about a man accused of trying to sabotage a bridge during the civil war. As the story begins, the man is about to be executed - by hanging from Owl Creek Bridge. We enter the man's mind, as he imagines that the rope breaks - and he narrowly escapes the onslaught of bullets from the Union soldiers. Then he runs through an arched forest canopy - trying to return to his wife and child, who are waiting for him at his home. Most of the story takes place, during that brief few seconds, as he falls from his gallows - to the moment when his neck snaps. An incredible journey of mind.... look out, there's a sign post up ahead! Yep, this short film was also an episode of The Twilight Zone, with Rod Serling. I believe it was the only episode that was not produced by the great writing team that made the show. As a Twilight Zone, it aired Feb. 28, 1964 - episode 142.

38. Rules of the Game, The

Description: Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game is one of the greatest films ever made. As you might already know, Jean Renoir was the son of the remarkable impressionist painter, Auguste Renoir - whose paintings are so beautiful and glorious that they are actually worth the millions that they sell for today. This film is perhaps Jean Renoir's finest work, though some might prefer his other masterpiece, La Grande Illusion, also available on this site. Unlike Grande Illusion that is a heavy film about the tragic ironies of war, this film is hilarious satire about the fading French aristocracy and a wonderful portrayal of the human comedy of love, marriage, and relationships.

42. Smiles of a Summer Night

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel is proud to present Smiles of a Summer Night, a tale of love, comedy, betrayal, religion, and carnal desires. Released in 1955 and directed by the Swedish master Ingmar Bergman, Sommarnattens leende is right up there in the list of top Bergman films. It reminded me very much of Jean Renoir's 1939 satiric look at love, Rules of the Game. My goodness, the folks back then sure did carry on. The scene at the end with seminarian son yearning for closure on his tortured love with his dad's wife - gets an answer from heaven. Well, not really - you will have to see it. A great movie - 10.

43. Snow White

Who could forget the eyeball getting sliced open with a straight razor, or the ants crawling out of the hand, or the man hauling two priests (Dali and Bunuel no less) attached to two huge grand pianos, each with a bloody dead donkey inside. Nope - one doesn't forget these images easily.
