4. Amos and Andy - Check and Double Check

Description: It is with some hesitation... that LikeTelevision™ presents this Amos and Andy classic film - Check and Double Check. There are some high points in the film that make it more interesting from a historical perspective. It was made in 1930 and is Amos and Andy's first talkie. There's even a part that features Duke Ellington and His Cotten Club Orchestra. Oddly enough, Animator extraordinaire Seymour Kneitel (of Popeye and Casper fame).... made a cartoon with a catchy title - Chick and Double Chick. Hmmm that sounds like an interesting cartoon!

5. And God Created Woman

Description: An God Created Woman features a young 22 year old actress named Brigitte Bardot, who had a smoldering passion and sexuality that virtually defined the genre of Teaser films. Bardot plays a young orphan who like to sun tan naked - so she has to marry someone, otherwise she will be shipped back to the orphanage. Ok - who really needs a plot. Also of interest - Director Roger Vadim was married to Bardot during this film, which made Bardot a huge star. Later, he went on to marry Jane Fonda, and directed the cult classic - Barberella, a comic strip adaptation of the space travelling vixen. He also has a love child, Christian Vadim, with french actress, Catherine Deneuve.

6. Ballet Mecanique

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents Fernand Leger's remarkable 1924 short film Ballet Mechanique. Fernand Leger was one of the greatest french Cubist painters (do a google image search of his name) and a contemporary of Pablo Picasso. In the early days of film as an artform, Leger created this masterpiece - which is landmark film in the development of montage, a cinematic tool that juxtiposes two or more images to infer related ideas or events. The best known example is Sergei Eisenstein's scene from Battleship Potemkin - the Odessa Steps segment with the baby carriage rolling down the steps and the mother's eyeglasses - made a year after this film.

7. Battle of Algiers, The

Description: The Battle of Algiers (or La Battaglia di Algeri if you prefer the original french title) is a remarkable movie about the sublime horrors of war. Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, this 1965 documentary tells the story of the Battle of Algiers, which pitted a french colonial government against an emerging group of revolutionary Islamic rebels, who used terrorism and suicide attacks to gain independence, but lost this battle - as the french used torture to extract information to break up and destroy the terrorist cells. Ultimately, the country did gain independence, but only after the french broke the revolutionary movement. The movie is very realistic, though no archive war footage was used in the creation of this film. The story tries to tell an unbiased review of events that transpired during this tumultuous period for the Northern African country.

9. Beverly Hillbillies - Duke Steals a Wife

Mrs Drysdale hires a pedigree poodle from France to fly in just to marry Claude - her poodle. The wedding is set - but the french poodle has a thing for Duke. And her owner, Mlle. 10. Beverly Hillbillies - Servant

Description: LikeTelevision™ Fans - this episode - Servant - is classic Clampetts as Mr. Drysdale arranges for the Clampetts to get domestic help. Confusion and misunderstanding gets the Clampetts all riled up. Elly throws Jethro over the second story landing. She also tosses the butler - Ravenswood, played by Arthur Gould Porter. Complete with a french maid, Marie - played by Sirry Steffen. Lots of laughs. Highly recommended!

11. Blood of a Poet - Jean Cocteau

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Jean Cocteau's first film, Blood of a Poet, a bizarre avant garde classic featuring disturbing images of the artistic process. When the film initially debuted, a poster in the lobby offered a $25 reward to anyone if they could figure out the meaning of the film. As yet, this prize remains unclaimed. The question I have - is what happened to the money ($25)... or as the old saying goes, to find out what's really happening - follow the money.

12. Boudu Saved From Drowning

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel proudly presents an enchanting 1932 Jean Renoir film called Boudu sauve des eaux, or in English - Boudu Saved from Drowning. A poor homeless man named Boudu tries to drown himself in the Seine River, but is saved by the wealthy book store owner, Edouard Lestingois who was watching Boudu from his window. Boudu moves in with the family and has quite an impact on each of their lives. Priape Boudu is played by Michel Simon, who was a major star in France. Basically - he was like the french Charlie Chaplin or Jerry Lewis. Kind of like a national treasure. Also of note, this film caused a major scandal when it was released. Not because of the kissing or extramarital affairs (hey, they're french)... but people took major exception to, of all things - the filthy side of being homeless. Boudu's table manners, especially eating the food with his fingers. Totally taboo! The Police came and shut down theaters. It was a very serious matter at the time. In addition, Boudu doesn't seem particularly grateful to Monsieur Lestingois' generosity. Folks were infuriated by this as well.

16. Cyrano de Bergerac w/ Jose Ferrer

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Jose Ferrer as Cyrano in the screen adaptation of Edmond Rostand's classic play. Jose Ferrer is nothing short of brilliant in his portrayal as the Cyrano - a gifted poet, wordsmith, swordsman, and a man with a beautiful and tender heart. But with all these gifts - he was also given a monster sized nose, that reminds one of the proboscis monkey - it is huge and hideous, a perfect foil for the lavish gifts he has been given. Cyrano loves a beautiful woman named Roxane, who happens to be a distant cousin, but he is afraid to tell her how he feels about her, because he is afraid of rejection.

17. Diaboliques, Les

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents -Diabolique, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzo. This 1955 film remains one of the greatest murder mystery, suspense thrillers ever created. It won a special Edgar award in 1956 as well as honors for Best Foreign Film from the New York Critics Circle in 1955. Simone Signoret's performance is nothing short of amazing. My favorite comment on the movie - it is the greatest movie Hitchcock never made - and one can easily see the Sir Alfred style of suspense at work and perhaps Hitchcock got a few good ideas from this film as well.

When it's ready - it pops out of the oven and heads off to Cake Land (which looks a lot like Candy Land... only with more dough. Why - well the gingerbread man is going to marry Miss Angel Cake. Oh... until the devil's food cake hijacks the young lass and ruins the gay ceremony. Wow... dancing cake slices, forks, french pastry rockettes, a tipsy rum cake -there's lots of craziness. Audrey grabs a beater and whips up the Old Milk Stream to save the day. Some cupcake coppers throw him in the Pie Wagon and the marriage is back on again.

25. Forbidden Games (Jeux Interdits)

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel presents a terrific 1952 classic called Jeux interdits, which roughly translates into Forbidden Games, the English title. The movie is set in France at the start of World War II. Brigitte Fossey plays the young Paulette, a 5 year old orphan who loses her parents as the family flees from the Nazis who are attacking Paris. They get killed by a Messerschmitt that strafes a bridge filled with civilians. Paulette get adopted by a sweet peasant family, the Dolles and she becomes good friends with their young boy about 7 or 8 named Michel Dolle (Georges Poujouly). The film tells an amazing story of the war as seen through the eyes of some beautiful children who are paying a dear price for the troubles of the world. We highly recommend this movie. Two thumbs up.

28. Grande Illusion, La

Description: Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion, a.k.a. Grand Illusion is a wonderful film about 2 french Officers during WWI who are captured and sent to a prison camp. Erich von Stroheim, best known for his role as Max Von Meyerling in Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd, stars as a German Ace Captain von Rauffenstein (who shot down the 2 frenchmen) and then gets reassigned to become commandant (he's not like Werner Von Klemperer, a.k.a. Colonel Klink) of a prison camp after sustaining serious injury by getting shot down. There's additional tension and class conflict between the french Captain De Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), who is an aristocrat and Lieutenant Marechal (Jean Gabin) who is a mechanic. The film also portrays an underlying anti-semitism, with the character Lieutenant Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio), who is slowing down an escape attempt when he strains his ankle. This is a really great film, voted in the top 250 of all time at IMDB.com.

29. I Like Ike - Presidential Campaign ad

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - a wonderful blast from the past, from 1952 - the I Like Ike presidential campaign ad for Dwight D. Eisenhower, who served two terms (1953-1961) as President of the United States. This ad is a less than slick cartoon with some terrific caricatures. Ike was the 34th President and served as Supreme Commander for US troops on D-Day, the massive beach landing on the french coast that led to the end of World War II. He also served as head of NATO forces in 1951 before being aproached by Republican officials who urged him to run for President. During the Cold War, he worked hard to achieve peace during a time when the world was struggling with the terrors of Communism which were spreading fast and threatening democracies across the globe. He prosposed that the US and the Soviets exchange military information but was rebuffed. However meetings were held and the talks helped reduce tensions. Finally - we can also thank Ike for the US interstate highway system and the impact that had on our ability to travel as well as the positive economic consequences of increased interstate commerce. Yep - Dwight D. Eisenhower not only seemed like a decent fellow, I bet he was a good man too. The tone of this political ad from 50 years ago is in sharp contrast to the ads we suffer through today - and we hope that the people who make these ads gain some insight for future presidential campaign themes.

45. One Step Beyond - Darkroom

Description: This is another great One Step Beyond episode. It stars the remarkable Cloris Leachman - as a young magazine photographer in France who is looking to capture some photos of the soul of France. Leachman is quite young in this episode and very attractive, though she always has a headache. Anyway - she gets a pensive visitor to photograph, played by Marcel Dalio. (you might recognize Dalio from Grand Illusion, where he played the french Officer, Rosenthal). In the end, the mysterious visitor attacks Leachman, and accuses her of infidelity. As it turns out - this guy murdered his wife in the same house many years ago, and has long since died. And - guess what, all the photos that Leachman took of this odd visitor turned out. Because he isn't in the picture... just empty chairs or walls. In another twist of synchronicity - this episode has an assistant director named Erich Von Stroheim, jr., whose dad also starred in La Grande Illusion. woooo... spooky!

47. Pajama Game

Description: The Pajama Game became the first in a string of smash hits for visionary choreographer Bob Fosse soon after it opened on Broadway in May of 1954. The play opened to rave reviews and was performed well over 1000 times. So when it came time to re-purpose it for the silver screen, Warner Bros. decided to basically lift the entire production from the stage at the St. James Theater and transport it to the sound stage in Hollywood. The female lead was changed from Janis Paige to Doris Day for box-office reasons and a couple of minor roles were switched out but, all-in-all what we see in the film is a faithful replication of the original Broadway production and a level of ensemble seldom seen on film. If you can stop being soooo sophisticated and are ready, willing and able to dispend reality for a little while, you will really enjoy this wonderful piece of period fluff.

49. Port of New York

Description: A very good film about narcotics smuggling in the Port of New York, during the 1940s. One might describe it as a film noire version of The french Connection. Agents Mickey Waters and Jim Flannery are out to get the man at the top, Paul Vicola, played by Yul Brynner. Lots of twists, danger and suspense - and one of the agents won't make it!

51. Rififi

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents -Rififi, a classic french fforeign film about how the perfect crime, goes very very wrong. Made in 1955, Jules Dassin won the Best Director award in the Cannes Film Festival that year - and for a good reason. This is one of the best crime dramas ever made. A great deal of planning goes into pulling off the biggest jewel heist of all time - and part 3 which features tthe actual heist is reknowned for its tension. For a long period, no words are spoken... the film is very quiet as we jjoin the criminal at the scene. Everything goes off as planned - but as is often the case, the human element will lead to thier demise.

52. Rules of the Game, The

Description: Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game is one of the greatest films ever made. As you might already know, Jean Renoir was the son of the remarkable impressionist painter, Auguste Renoir - whose paintings are so beautiful and glorious that they are actually worth the millions that they sell for today. This film is perhaps Jean Renoir's finest work, though some might prefer his other masterpiece, La Grande Illusion, also available on this site. Unlike Grande Illusion that is a heavy film about the tragic ironies of war, this film is hilarious satire about the fading french aristocracy and a wonderful portrayal of the human comedy of love, marriage, and relationships.

54. Scarlet Pimpernel, The

Description: LikeTelevision™ presents - The Scarlet Pimpernel starring Leslie Howard as Sir Percy Blakeney, Merle Oberon as Lady Marguerite, Nigel Bruce as the Prince of Wales, and Raymond Massey as the evil Chauvelin. Based on the classic literary work by Baroness Orczy - the movie is delightful screen adaptation of the story of Sir Percy Blakeney, a foppish fool in the English aristocracy who is secretly a courageous hero that saves some french aristocrats from Reign of Terror. Using guile, wit and an endless array of cunning disguises - the Scarlet Pimpernel (Sir Percy) becomes an unlikely hero who is hunted by the dastardly Chauvelin (Raymond Massey), who wants to introduce the Pimpernel to the Guillotine.

55. Scarlet Street

56. Shoot The Piano Player

Description: Francois Truffaut's gangster film from 1960 - Shoot the Piano Player (or in french - Tirez Sur le Pianiste) is terrific! Starring Charles Aznavour as local pub pianist Charlie Kohler and Marie Dubois as his love interest, Lena. Years ago, Charlie used to be reknowned concert pianist Edouard Saroyan, till he had a falling out with his wife, who fell out a window. Edouard dropped out and became Charlie Kohler, pub pianist. The fact that Charlie's brothers are gangsters complicates life a bit, lots of great dialogue too. PLUS, Boby Lapointe is featured in a cool singing waiter cameo and does a live rendition of catchy tune called Framboise.
