1. And God Created Woman

Description: An God Created Woman features a young 22 year old actress named Brigitte Bardot, who had a smoldering passion and sexuality that virtually defined the genre of Teaser films. Bardot plays a young orphan who like to sun tan naked - so she has to marry someone, otherwise she will be shipped back to the orphanage. Ok - who really needs a plot. Also of interest - Director Roger Vadim was married to Bardot during this film, which made Bardot a huge star. Later, he went on to marry Jane Fonda, and directed the cult classic - Barberella, a comic strip adaptation of the space travelling vixen. He also has a love child, Christian Vadim, with French actress, Catherine Deneuve.

2. Ballet Mecanique

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents Fernand Leger's remarkable 1924 short film Ballet Mechanique. Fernand Leger was one of the greatest French Cubist painters (do a google image search of his name) and a contemporary of Pablo Picasso. In the early days of film as an artform, Leger created this masterpiece - which is landmark film in the development of montage, a cinematic tool that juxtiposes two or more images to infer related ideas or events. The best known example is Sergei Eisenstein's scene from Battleship Potemkin - the Odessa Steps segment with the baby carriage rolling down the steps and the mother's eyeglasses - made a year after this film.

3. Blood of a Poet - Jean Cocteau

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Jean Cocteau's first film, Blood of a Poet, a bizarre avant garde classic featuring disturbing images of the artistic process. When the film initially debuted, a poster in the lobby offered a $25 reward to anyone if they could figure out the meaning of the film. As yet, this prize remains unclaimed. The question I have - is what happened to the money ($25)... or as the old saying goes, to find out what's really happening - follow the money.

4. Boudu Saved From Drowning

Description: The LikeTelevision™ movie channel proudly presents an enchanting 1932 Jean Renoir film called Boudu sauve des eaux, or in English - Boudu Saved from Drowning. A poor homeless man named Boudu tries to drown himself in the Seine River, but is saved by the wealthy book store owner, Edouard Lestingois who was watching Boudu from his window. Boudu moves in with the family and has quite an impact on each of their lives. Priape Boudu is played by Michel Simon, who was a major star in France. Basically - he was like the French Charlie Chaplin or Jerry Lewis. Kind of like a national treasure. Also of note, this film caused a major scandal when it was released. Not because of the kissing or extramarital affairs (hey, they're French)... but people took major exception to, of all things - the filthy side of being homeless. Boudu's table manners, especially eating the food with his fingers. Totally taboo! The Police came and shut down theaters. It was a very serious matter at the time. In addition, Boudu doesn't seem particularly grateful to Monsieur Lestingois' generosity. Folks were infuriated by this as well.

5. Diaboliques, Les

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents -Diabolique, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzo. This 1955 film remains one of the greatest murder mystery, suspense thrillers ever created. It won a special Edgar award in 1956 as well as honors for Best Foreign Film from the New York Critics Circle in 1955. Simone Signoret's performance is nothing short of amazing. My favorite comment on the movie - it is the greatest movie Hitchcock never made - and one can easily see the Sir Alfred style of suspense at work and perhaps Hitchcock got a few good ideas from this film as well.

8. Rififi

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents -Rififi, a classic French fforeign film about how the perfect crime, goes very very wrong. Made in 1955, Jules Dassin won the Best Director award in the Cannes Film Festival that year - and for a good reason. This is one of the best crime dramas ever made. A great deal of planning goes into pulling off the biggest jewel heist of all time - and part 3 which features tthe actual heist is reknowned for its tension. For a long period, no words are spoken... the film is very quiet as we jjoin the criminal at the scene. Everything goes off as planned - but as is often the case, the human element will lead to thier demise.

9. Scarlet Street

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea. One of the best in the film noire genre - this is one of Fritz Lang's best works - right up there with Metropolis and M. Edward G. Robinson stars as Chris Cross, an aging cashier who is married to the ultimate nagging wife. As a hobby, he likes to paint and fancies himself to be an artist. One day - he saves a young damsel in distress named Kitty and tells her he is a great artist. One thing leads to another - she tries to shake the old man down with her creepy boyfriend Johnny and old Chris falls in love with the struggling young actress named Kitty. Eventually - it all blows up and somebody gets killed.

10. Shoot The Piano Player

Description: Francois Truffaut's gangster film from 1960 - Shoot the Piano Player (or in French - Tirez Sur le Pianiste) is terrific! Starring Charles Aznavour as local pub pianist Charlie Kohler and Marie Dubois as his love interest, Lena. Years ago, Charlie used to be reknowned concert pianist Edouard Saroyan, till he had a falling out with his wife, who fell out a window. Edouard dropped out and became Charlie Kohler, pub pianist. The fact that Charlie's brothers are gangsters complicates life a bit, lots of great dialogue too. PLUS, Boby Lapointe is featured in a cool singing waiter cameo and does a live rendition of catchy tune called Framboise.
