2. At War with the Army

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - At War with the Army, a terrific Martin & Lewis comedy classic about the craziness of being a soldier in the US Army. Jerry Lewis stars as pfc Alvin Korwin, who as you might expect, is a goofy nerd with a heart of gold. Meanwhile - Dean Martin plays First Sgt. Vic Puccinelli, a childhood friend of Korwin's, who is a callous womanizer, trying to dodge an airhead, former sweetheart named Millie... who is in trouble, i.e. pregnant. Jean Ruth is terrific in her role as Millie. The film also introduces Polly Bergen, who plays Helen - Vic's current girlfriend. They do a beautiful duet in an old style recording booth - where soldiers would send nifty audio messages to friends and family back home.

3. Battle of Algiers, The

Description: The Battle of Algiers (or La Battaglia di Algeri if you prefer the original French title) is a remarkable movie about the sublime horrors of war. Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, this 1965 documentary tells the story of the Battle of Algiers, which pitted a French colonial government against an emerging group of revolutionary Islamic rebels, who used terrorism and suicide attacks to gain independence, but lost this battle - as the French used torture to extract information to break up and destroy the terrorist cells. Ultimately, the country did gain independence, but only after the French broke the revolutionary movement. The movie is very realistic, though no archive war footage was used in the creation of this film. The story tries to tell an unbiased review of events that transpired during this tumultuous period for the Northern African country.

Comedian Richard Pryor plays a frightened soldier for most of the movie in an annoying red beret and former NFL football great Rosie Grier (L.A. Rams) plays the funny big cuddly GI. (Rosie trivia - he was very skilled at Macrame and helped catch Bobby Kennedy's assassin Sirhan Sirhan on June 6, 1968 along with Olympian Rafer Johnson). 12. Escape from Sobibor

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - Escape from Sobibor starring Alan Arkin, Joanna Pacula and Rutger Hauer. Sobibor was a Jewish concentration camp in World War II that was created for the sole purpose of exterminating as many Jewish people as quickly as possible - part of Hitler's notorious final solution, which called for eliminating the Jewish people from Europe. Most estimates believe that 260,000 people were killed in the Nazi gas chambers at Sobibor - making it a small sized operation compared to Auschwitz or Dachau. What makes Sobibor so noteworthy - the escape on October 14, 1943 when over 300 of the 600 Jewish prisoners escaped into the Polish death camp and lived to tell their story. The film does a remarkable job of telling the story of these determined heros - and heroines who refused to give into despair, and hoped in spite of a hopeless situation. The film was nominated for 5 Emmy Awards, and Won the Golden Globeaward n 1988 for Best Motion Picture made for TV. Excellent.

21. Grande Illusion, La

Description: Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion, a.k.a. Grand Illusion is a wonderful film about 2 French Officers during WWI who are captured and sent to a prison camp. Erich von Stroheim, best known for his role as Max Von Meyerling in Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd, stars as a German Ace Captain von Rauffenstein (who shot down the 2 Frenchmen) and then gets reassigned to become commandant (he's not like Werner Von Klemperer, a.k.a. Colonel Klink) of a prison camp after sustaining serious injury by getting shot down. There's additional tension and class conflict between the French Captain De Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), who is an aristocrat and Lieutenant Marechal (Jean Gabin) who is a mechanic. The film also portrays an underlying anti-semitism, with the character Lieutenant Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio), who is slowing down an escape attempt when he strains his ankle. 25. Last Man on Earth, The

Description: The Last Man on Earth was origianlly released in Italy as L'Ultimo uomo della Terra, and later redubbed in English as The Last Man on Earth. Starring Vincent Price, this is a terrific movie from 1964 based on Richard Matheson's classic Sc-Fi novel, I am Legend. A deadly virus (actually a bacillus, a rod shaped bacterium - like Bacillus anthracis, a.k.a. Anthrax) destroys most of the human population, turning people into horrible vampire zombie creatures who feed off of human blood. Vincent Price is a scientist trying to stay alive. He searches for a cure, destroys the monsters, and finds himself as the last real man on Earth. This film clearly inspired George Romero who directed the classic - Night of the Living Dead. In addition, Matheson's I am Legend was also the inspiration for Omega Man, with Charleton Heston. There is also a rumor of a remake of this classic, but the original will be hard to beat. We loved this film, and bet you will too!

29. Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Description: LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. This film by Robert Enrico is adapted from the story written by Ambrose Bierce. The short film does an excellent job of telling this great tale, about a man accused of trying to sabotage a bridge during the civil war. As the story begins, the man is about to be executed - by hanging from Owl Creek Bridge. We enter the man's mind, as he imagines that the rope breaks - and he narrowly escapes the onslaught of bullets from the Union soldiers. Then he runs through an arched forest canopy - trying to return to his wife and child, who are waiting for him at his home. Most of the story takes place, during that brief few seconds, as he falls from his gallows - to the moment when his neck snaps. An incredible journey of mind.... look out, there's a sign post up ahead! Yep, this short film was also an episode of The Twilight Zone, with Rod Serling. I believe it was the only episode that was not produced by the great writing team that made the show. As a Twilight Zone, it aired Feb. 28, 1964 - episode 142.

34. One Step Beyond - Mask

Description: This is another terrific episode of One Step Beyond, a cool Sci-Fi TV show from the late 50s, early 60s... that inspired a few other cool sci-fi tv shows like The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. The Mask features Wesley Lau, best known as Lt. Andy Anderson from the Perry Mason tv show, as a soldier named Wollenski. He got lost in the middle of the Egyptian desert during his tour of duty, and wakes up in the hospital with a pillow case over his head... I guess he got sunburned or something. Anyway, for no good reason, he starts drawing some wild hieroglyphics on a napkin and gives the artwork to a guy named Brimley (and while he looks like Wilfred Brimley on the Quaker Oats commercials - it's a different guy)... who just happens to be an archeologist. Small world, huh? Well... it seems that Wollenski has the spirit of some old Pharoah in him, who wants to reveal the whereabouts of his missing tomb.
