Harry Street's character, played by Gregory Peck is loosely based on the life of Ernest Hemingway. He remembers the times in Paris with the Lost Generation (A group of American artists - including Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Alice B. Toklas, and Hemingway) and his time spent in Spain - watching the bull fights and fighting in the civil war. And of course - the times hunting big game in Africa. The movie also features an incredible scene with Jazz great, Benny Carter playing Alto sax in a Paris cafe. An amazing talent. Also cool - the scene in Spain with Vicente Gomez on guitar and Richard Allen dancing flamenco. Ole!

Part one
Intro, color, credits, etc The film begins at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, where Harry Street is trying to recover from a small leg wound that got infected and now is threatening his life. He is comforted by his current lover named Helen (played by Susan Hayward). Oddly enough - this is the second film for Peck and Hayward who starred as David and Bathsheba, also directed by Henry King in 1951. In case you forgot that story - King David from the Bible falls in love with a beautiful woman taking a bath (Bathsheba) - so he sends her husband Uriah into battle, and then has the other soldiers pull back, leaving Uriah to die. They were friends too - but David really wanted Bathsheba for himself. I mention this - because in this movie - Peck doesn't really care that much for Helen (Susan Hayward) - he is perpetually longing for Cynthia Green (played by Ava Gardner). Ah... the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Susan Hayward stars as Helen - who does all she can to nurse poor Harry back to health

Part two
Harry flashes back to Paris - to a shoddy cafe named Emile's, the place where he met his beloved Cynthia. The romance begins with the flicker of a match and gets steamy once the great Benny Carter pulls out his saxophone. WOW - what a player. Then, it's off to Africa to bag a Rhinoceros.

Ava Gardner as Cynthia Green - Harry's one true love who dumps him for the dancer

Part three
More hunting scenes in Africa and a chat by the fire about being a man, hunting and killing animals. It is ironic how times have changed - back then (in the 1950s) Hemingway was seen as some kind of super macho hero - now he would be seen as a drunken overbearing brute with no sensitivity. HA! Anyway - Harry gets an assignment to cover the war in Spain -and he wants to go. But Cynthia learns she s pregnant - but doesn't tell Harry about it. She does fall down the stairs on purpose to terminate the pregnancy however.
