Man with the Golden Arm
Starring - Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker, Kim Novak
Directed by - Otto Preminger(1955) - B&W - 120 min Frank Sinatra is Frankie Machine - a recovering heroin addict, married to a crippled woman who encourages him to deal cards with his golden arm. Meanwhile, he's in love with another woman (Kim Novak). Lots of really cool period jazz music - though old blues eyes doesn't sing, he does play some terrible drums, especially when he's jones-ing in a cold turkey spasm. Also of note is Elmer Bernstein's really cool jazzy music, which helps drive the film's emotional rollercoaster.

Part one Ex-addict, Frankie Machine hops off the bus, fresh out of jail - clean and sober. We meet Sparrow, played by Arnold Stang - the thinking man's Huntz Hall. He's learned how to play the drums and is looking to embark on a music career. (an industry known to be drug free) Part two Frankie returns to with his wheelchair bound wife Zosh. She less than thrilled with his decision to become a drummer and encourages him to go back to dealing cards. He gets picked up by the cops. Part 2 closes with Zosh getting treatment from a quack doctor and blaming Frankie for her affliction.
Part three Frankie falls off the wagon and hits the heroin. Meanwhile, he tries to win over Molly, (Kim Novak) who gives him the cold shoulder. Still, she remains sympathetic. Great street scene at the end of part 3 with Frankie and Molly talking outside the appliance store window.
