On June 22, 1937 - Joe Louis knocks out Jim Braddock to become boxing's heavyweight champion. The Brown Bomber wasted few punches and few words. (Joe Louis in an interview shakes his fist). Louis had been the first black heavyweight champ in 22 years and may have been denied earlier title shots because of race. Opponents of all sorts got their chances against him but fell like clockwork into his Bum of The Month heap. After six undefeated years, Louis joined the war effort and announced he was through with boxing. He returned after the war however and continued the longest heavyweight reign in history, winning 25 title fights over 11 years and 8 months.
