French designer Louis Reard paraded a model down a Paris runway in a new two-piece swimsuit, that he called a bikini. The impact of the event was quickly felt in California, were dozens of bathing beauties modeled the daring suit for willing cameras. Reard had hoped that the suit would command world wide attention and for reasons beyond the obvious, it did. Uncertain as to what to name it, Reard spontaneously dubbed it bikini during the week in which world headlines were occupied by nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. Wearing a bikini actually ignited more cries of outrage and scorn than the act of exploding an atomic bomb.
