The Telstar communications satellite picked up broadcast signals from France and bounced them down to a 384 ton antenna in Andover, Maine, and thus delivered the first live TV pictures from Europe to America on July 11, 1962. Telstar was launched from Cape Canaveral and paid for by AT&T, as an experiment in TV transmission and also in transmitting radio, telephone and telephoto signals. The satellite contained more than 1,000 transistors that bounced signals between 3 Earth stations. Americans watched a 7-minute program, that included a song by Yves Montand. Today, the commonplace use of satellites to broadcast world events on TV owes much to the pioneering of Telstar.
