The LikeTelevision™ History channel proudly presents, This Day in History - September 1! September 1, 1939 - Germany invades Poland. Before invading Poland, Hitler instructed his generals to act with brutality and close their hearts to pity. Covered by the fearsome Luftwaffe which bombed many Polish cities beyond recognition, 56 German divisions crossed the border into Poland on September 1, 1939. Poland's flat and fertile lands proved ideal for the Nazi Blitzkreig or lightning war machinery. The Polish army and cavalry fought bravely but were sadly outmatched by Germany's modern technology. Two days after the invasion, Britain and France declared war, formally initiating World War II. Within a month, Poland was partitioned between Germany and the Soviet Union, which had entered into an alliance before the invasion.
