Mecca is the holy center of Islam, which comprises 1/7 of the world's population. The prophet Mohammed, founder of Islam, was born there, but at that time, Mecca was a commercial center for nomadic Arab traders. Mohammed was a respected trader himself, until the age of 40, when the archangel Gabriel appeared before him and revealed the word of God, which was taken down by Mohammed in the Koran. When the prophet began to preach, Mecca cast him out. Years later, he returned to Mecca, only to escape a plot to kill him. On September 24, 622 the prophet returned to his followers at Yathrib and commenced the Hegira, or immigration, which founded Islam as a religion and an organized community.
