The LikeTelevision History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - October 4! October 4, 1957, Soviet space technology moves dramatically out of the planning phase and fire the first shot in the space race by successfully launching Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. Claiming that Russia has opened the way to inter-planetary travel, Soviet headlines are unrestrained. Even a Soviet scientist insists they are not in the space race with the United States. All the same U.S. authorities are somewhat shocked that Russian has launched a satellite several months ahead of America. Sputnik I broadcasts signals over two frequencies that are picked up in the United States and Europe. Flying at an altitude of 560 miles, Sputnik clocks an air time of 1 hour and 35 minutes per global orbit.
