Edgar is really shy with girls - but he's interested in his new neighbor across the street, Betty Clare (Adrienne Corri). He finally gets the courage to ask her out on a date but has trouble with the kiss good-bye.
Okay - Edgar takes Betty out on a fancy dinner and they meet his best friend Carl Loomis (Laurence Payne). It seems Betty has a thing for Carl, and they both agree Edgar is pretty pathetic. Carl and Edgar play chess and get a visit by Betty.

Edgar buys Betty a large stone and is looking forward to asking her to marry him. Menawhile, Betty has her heart set on getting Carl, Edgar's best friend. When the couple finally sneaks off to Betty's apartment, Edgar watches their night of passion.

Edgar invites Carl over and discusses the preview night's and his view from the window. Then he whacks him with a fire poker. Edgar isn't getting any sleep as the rattles and bumps in the night all sound like Carl's heart.
Edgar is slowing going nuts. Meanwhile, Betty Clare begins to suspect Edgar of being involved in Carl's disappearence. She hounds the police and finally she brings in some evidence they can go on. Thump Thump Thump... Edgar continues to go out of his head. He goes to take this heart business into his own hands.
Edgar continues to be tormented by the incessant thumping noises in his head... Will it stop? Will he confess? And what about Betty? Watch the stunning conclusion!
