The LikeTelevision™ History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - October 28! On October 28, 1886, The Statue of Liberty is Dedicated. Two years of work and 70 million dollars were required to restore the The Statue of Liberty, 100 years after it creation by the French sculptor Frederic August Bartholdi. The statue was a gift of friendship from France to the United States and it was a symbol of New World freedom and opportunity for 17 million immigrants who passed through neighboring Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. Copper sheets, hammered by hand were assembled over 4 steel supports designed by Alexandre Gustov Eiffel. Bartholdi and his assistants completed the statue in 1885, disassembled it and pieced it together again in New York, where it was formally dedicated to the United States, this point in time, October 28, 1886.
