Starring - The Tacoma Bridge
Directed by - (2001) - Color - 1 min The LikeTelevision History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - November 7! On November 7, 1940 - The Tacoma Bridge Collapses. It was the 3rd largest suspension bridge in the world, built largely as a defense measure, to connect Seattle and Tacoma with the Pugent Sound Navy yard. From its opening, just 4 months before its demise, the bridge had a pronounced longitudinal roll. The strange undulations earned the span the name Galloping Gertie. The cause was the peculiar topography of the Tacoma Narrows, which turned the passageway into a giant wind tunnel, doubling the velocity of any air current. Miraculously, none perished the day the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, cracking in a 42 mile per hour wind, collapsed into the waters of Puget Sound 190 feet below - this point in time, November 7, 1940.
