On February 1, 1979 - The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was greeted at the base of the monument to the dynasty of Shah Reza Pahlevi when he returned to Iran on February 1, 1979. The Shah and his family had been forced into exile, and Iran was eager to establish an Islamic government. Some supported the Ayatollah Sharietmadari the more moderate and less authoritarian man than Khomeini, but extremist persuassions prevailed. Khomeini was handed almost absolute power over a government that made no distinction between church and state. The new Iranian constitution gave him the power to dismiss a president and to declare war. Such powers stem directly, if not from Allah, at least from the unquestioning devotion of millions of Iranians.
