Twenty top Nazis were held accountable for the German atrocities perpetrated against millions during World War II at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial, which began on November 20, 1945. Hermann Goering, Rudolph Hess, and Joachim Von Ribbentrop sat with others whose names still invoke an aura of fear. Judged by a tribunal of representatives from the United States, France, Britain and Russia, the architects of Nazi policy were found guilty, one by one. Half were sentenced to death, and hours before his scheduled execution Hermann Goering cheated the hangman with a capsule of cyanide. Others such as Rudolf Hess, spent their life in prison.
