The small volcanic island of Iwo Jima, 750 miles south of Tokyo, became a critical strategic target for advancing U.S. forces in the Pacific. Marines stormed the beachhead under heavy fire from some 20,000 Japanese, firmly entrenched in tunnels dug out to withstand enemy bombs. The Japanese needed the island as a radar and aircraft base. Once landed, U.S. Marines moved inch by inch in intensive fighting that lasted 4 days before a victorious assault on Mount Suribachi, the island's only peak, on February 23, 1945. Raising the flag on the Suribachi's summit was one of the great morale boosters of the U.S. war effort and was considered to be the Marines' proudest moment.
