There can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator.
John Fredersen, an industrialist "brain" runs a huge factory of underground machines. His plant is staffed by poor workers - who live in a dark, dank underground world beneath the machine layer. Meanwhile, we meet his son, Freder, the hero of the story, and Maria - the heroine.
With Brigitte Helm as Maria (and the robot)
Alfred Abel as John Fredersen
Freder, the boss's son, decides to go underground where he sees the miserable conditions for the workers. John Fredersen has an evil scientist genius named Rotwang who creates an incredible robot. Fredersen has Rotwang make the Robot look exactly like Maria - who is a humanitarian leader of the workers and friend of the children.
Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) with the Robot!
Fredersen wants the robot Maria to incite the workers to violence - (so he gets rid of the workers who will be replaced by the tireless robots). We also get a story about Babel - and the men with plans, and the men who build these plans. Meanwhile, John's son is falling in love with Maria... then Rotwang grabs Maria and takes her back to the lab.

Maria is strapped on the table and wired for human and robot hybridization. A wild electric light show, buuzzzzz... and the robot now looks exactly like Maria. Freder sees the Robot Maria with her Dad and takes ill (or has a dream or something - weird wild art film sequence.) Maria (the robot) starts getting the workers all riled up and ready to start a riot.
One of the workers with the machines
Maria (the robot) joins the workers in ruining the machines. Meanwhile, Freder confronts the mob and almosts gets killed. When the workers wrecked the machines... it flooded their homes. What about the children??? Oh NO! What happens to Maria, the robot, Freder, his Dad, the workers... and what happens to the children!!! Watch the exciting ending of this landmark film and find out!
