On March 15, 1938 oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia, by the Aramco Company, which Standard Oil, Texaco and Mobil were a part. Oil transformed a virtual dust bowl into a nation so wealthy that when King Faisal assumed power, his primary problem was what to do with too much money. Fortune-hunting, corruption and inexperience brought special problems, so Faisal aspired to modernize the nation through extensive public expenditures on housing, schooling, transportation and medicine. For a country that practically floats on oil, transformation of a once nomadic desert into a flowering modernized state is very real. An ironic destiny for a land that also protects the Holy Islamic city of Mecca.
