The LikeTelevision™ History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - March 18! On March 18, 1962, the French end their 7 year war with Algeria. In 1954, French paratroopers landed in French Algeria to subdue a revolt by the Muslim National Liberation Front, or F.L.N. - which sought independence from France. Continued unrisings and a right-wing counterrevolt by French Algerians, brought down the government in Paris and brought Charles De Gaulle back into power. On his first visit to Algers, DeGaulle was cheered by the colonists, but as disorder continued, DeGaulle revealed that he favored independence for Algeria. A group of his own generals tried to stage a counter-coup, which failed. A truce finally ended 7 years of war on March 18, 1962, a few months later - Algeria became an independent nation after 130 years of colonial rule.
