The Gallipoli peninsula, which guards entry to the Sea of Marmara, en route to the Turkish capitol of Constantinople became the scene of heavy bloodshed when Allied forces first attacked Turkish forts in early February 1915. British and French battleships had firepower superior to the Turkish land-based artillery, but German mines damaged the Allied fleet, forcing a deadly land battle that cost close to half a million lives. It was Winston Churchill's belief that capturing Constantinople would force German troops off the Russian front, but the loses proved to great to bear. After almost a year of battle, Allied forces staged a full retreat from the shores of Gallipoli on January 8, 1916.
