The LikeTelevision™ History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - March 27! March 27, 1958 - Nikita Khruschev becomes Soviet Premier. Nikita Khruschev first gained Party emminence by organizing Soviet guerrilla resistance to the Nazis in World War II (WWII). After Stalin's death in 1953, he became First Secretary and formed a leadership team with Marshall A. Bulganin. On March 27, 1958, Khruschev was also named Premier and assumed full control of the Soviet Union. He extended Soviet influence with Arab and Asian leaders, and with the United States, flip flopped a rhetoric peaceful co-existence with Cold War militarism. In launching the first cosmonauts, he gave Russia an early lead in the space race, and in backing off during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he may have averted World War III. In 1964, Nikita Khruschev abruptly retired.
