Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Directed by - Dario Argento

(1970) - Color - 96 min
You will love this classic thriller, complete with a baffling set of twists and turns on the streets of Rome. Who is the killer? I bet you get faked out. Contains some nudity, or see through pajamams anyway - is that nudity? She did have clothes on, but the clothes seem transparent. Nothing too naughty, but just thought I should warn you. Lots of blood - so this isn't a good one for the kids.

Part one
Intro - Color - Title screens etc. Sam Dalmas, an American writer in Italy, witnesses an attempted murder in a brightly lit art gallery while walking home one evening. He summons the police who begin to feel that Sam knows more than he is telling. The victim survives. A bloody glove is found. Sam's passport is taken from him by the police which forces him and his super-model wife, Julia, to postpone their return to the United States. It seems there has been a series of unsolved murders in the area recently and as Sam walks home through the fog, someone takes a swipe at him with a meat cleaver. That night as he tries to sleep, flashbacks of the incident begin to haunt his mind.

Sam (Tony Musante) and Julia (Suzy Kendall

The Inspector, Morosini played by Enrico Maria Salerno

Part two
The next day at the police line-up, Sam learns more about the investigation and feels himself becoming more and more obsessed with the case and begins a little investigation of his own which turns up even more curious clues. Inspector Morosini comes to Sam and Julia's home to inform Sam of another similar murder that has just occurred and escorts Sam to the police station for more questioning. Satisfied that Sam has nothing to do with the murders, Morosini returns his passport and advises him to return to America. Morosini gets a phone call from the murderer.

Ahhhhh - SCARY!

Part three
Unable to get a quick flight back to America, Sam continues his investigation and Morosini assigns a bodyguard to watch over the couple in case the murderer tries anything. While Sam and Julia take a stroll that evening with the bodyguard in tow, a speeding auto runs down and kills their bodyguard whereupon an armed man in a yellow slicker jumps out of the car and chases Sam shooting at him all the while. Sam narrowly escapes. Beautiful young girl number 5 is murdered and Sam receives a phone call from the murderer (which he records) threatening to kill his wife if he continues his investigation. Forensic evidence comparing the two phone calls shows there must be two separate murderers.

Johnny Cochran and the bloody glove? If the glove don't fit, you must acquit?

Part four
As Sam and Julia pack to leave Italy, they review the audio tapes with their friend and Professor of Ornithology, Carlo. There is a very strange sound in the background of the tapes that they cannot seem to identify. Sam just doesn't seem to be able to let it go and a sudden brainstorm forces him to leave Julia behind to chase down another lead. His return is delayed due to a transportation strike so he phones to tell Julia not to worry, that he will be home soon. Julia, alone in the apartment, hears what she thinks is Sam returning but is indeed the murderer come make her victim number 6. What follows is a very frightening sequence with the murderer cutting the phone and lights and trying to chop through the door to kill her. (Stanley Kubrick paid homage to Argento's imagery in the famous bathroom scene from his film, The Shining.) Sam saves the day but the killer is still on the loose. Carlo returns to tell Sam that he has identified the strange sound from the tape as being the call of a very rare bird with crystal plumage and that there just happens to be one at the local zoo.

Sam would rather investigate.

Part five
Sam, Carlo, Julia and the police converge on the zoo where they hear a disturbance coming from an apartment within screaming distance of the rare bird's cage. Busting through the door to the apartment, they encounter the perpetrator in the middle of yet another murder. A struggle ensues. The murderer falls from the balcony and dies but not before he confesses to the murders. But, where is Julia? She seems to have vanished ... or to have been kidnapped. A fantastic, suspenseful musical score by Ennio Morricone accompanies the startling conclusion to this Dario Argento classic, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Tony watches helpless as the gallery lady bleeds on the floor.... Help me, help me.
